Online Business Case Study – Slingin’ Tees With Tim From Freeclothing.co

This is part of an ongoing series of articles where I interview the owners of online businesses in a range of niches and industries. In this month’s online business case study we’ll talk with Tim Trad from freeclothing.co

Enter Tim…

Describe your business in 1-3 sentences.

We are clothing company that has evolved a lot over the past 10 years. We launched “TeeTubes” 7 months ago and are building a community around members-only designs delivered monthly!

What is your website?

www.freeclothing.co

How much monthly revenue is your business generating?

We have about 130 subscribers right now in the “TeeTubes” program at $25 per member so that’s about $3,200 a month. However we have been focused on making the program as awesome as it can be before we really push it hard.

holdfast teeHow long did it take you to get to this level?

We’ve been a “company” for almost a decade, however it has never really been given the chance to flourish. Joel and I both have had other main projects throughout that time. We did still manage to sell a couple million dollars worth of tees during that time (mainly between 2011-2013) So long story short it’s kind of hard to answer “how long it took”. My business partner Joel starts full time on monday so .free will finally be getting the full attention it requires and deserves to grow!

What was your first product and how did you decide on it?

The first tee was called “Good Morning” and was a photograph of a surfer headed out in the early morning San Diego sunrise and represented chasing after something you loved and the beginning of a passion. Neither of us had any idea of what was coming haha.

You have a pretty enormous Instagram following. How did you build such a large audience and was it worth it?

I spent years as a professional musician and touring the world either playing music or selling tee shirts. Being in front of and interacting with so many people daily helped a bunch. But I am very active on social and I understand the value. Actually I have 2 articles that would answer this question perfectly here are the links if you’d like to read more!

What were your biggest mistakes and or wastes of time/money?

I could write the longest book in history on my mistakes but to sum it all up, if you don’t love what you are doing then just stop.

Are there any tools or resources that you can’t live without?

Oh man my iphones and my macbooks. I often joke about how worthless I would be if the internet wasn’t a thing, secretly it’s kind of scary!

What is one thing that you would like people to know about your business?

We are truly not in this for the money or anything like that, we love this art and want everyone in the world to get a chance to get involved and hopefully fall in love with the experience.

What’s next for your business?

We are working on building a new studio to start producing our videos more often and we are recording our first podcast on today! (November 2nd) There is a ton in the queue but those are the big things this week!

What is one tip that you would give to an aspiring fashion or clothing entrepreneur?

Make something you are excited to wear. Do not get into fashion or clothing unless you really love what you are doing, there are so many other ways to make way more money so much faster.
